Again in Singapore from Ise Shima Japan

First, we would like to thank the Embassy of Japan in Singapore for allowing us to have our event again at the Japan Creative Center.

Our annual jewellery competition, “The Grand Prix of Akoya Pearl Jewellery in lse Shima” was conceptualised to share the beauty of Akoya pearls with the world. This is its 5th consecutive year. A total of 101 pearl jewellery creations from 11 countries were received, and the top 30 entries were presented in Singapore.

2022 our theme is “Moonlight”. Since ancient times, many cultures have cherished pearls as “Dewdrops from the Moon” dropped into the ocean. Calm and soothing moonlight looks exactly like the lustre of Akoya pearls.

Ise Shima is the Origin of Pearl Farming

Ise Shima is the birthplace of cultured pearls. In the late 19 century, Akoya oysters were first cultivated in Ise Shima, establishing a method to create beautiful round pearls. This technique for pearl cultivation contributed to the growth of the pearl industry worldwide.

But we are now facing difficulties, including global warming and the ageing of experienced pearl farmers. Akoya pearl production has declined 90% in the past 10 years. In the last 2 years, 80% of Akoya Oysters died from seawater temperature change. These factors make luxury pearl jewellery production and design even more challenging for the industry.

From Singapore to the World

I came to Singapore in 2005 on a company assignment, but I took over my family business, Pearl FALCO in 2016 from Singapore.

I used to work for multinational companies, so I never believed that running a business would be this difficult. Of course, as I run the company now, I have gained a lot more appreciation of my parents and their staff’s consistent hard work. Without them, I might not have gone to university or become who I am. They had been doing well in Ise Shima. Still, any business can only last forever by adapting to a changing business environment. So, I stepped up to kickstart this change. I started my Singapore business under my parent’s legacy. But now, I have to build up my legacy from here, in my 2nd hometown Singapore and hopefully project my dream to the world.

As I spent more time trying to promote the beauty of Ise Shima and the beauty of pearls, I felt blessed to encounter so many nice people and friends who have tried to help me fulfil my legacy. And for this, I am truly grateful. My mission and hope is to share our knowledge of pearls globally, with the many stories, love and devotion and hard work behind each creation of pearl jewellery.

Each pearl jewellery design uniquely expresses love, marking memorable moments in our lives. It’s my pleasure to see love being expressed through our pearl jewellery. For me, Pearls are Not just jewellery. It’s Family, Love, and Connection. I wish to connect you and Pearls and Ise Shima and the world.

We will continuously do our best to share the beauty of pearls with the world. And we are excited to see the beautiful pieces in the Grand Prix Akoya Pearl Jewellery Ise Shima 2023
