How Pearl FALCO Sees and Selects Quality

At Pearl FALCO, pearls are not defined by trends, certificates, or numbers alone.

They are living gems — shaped by nature, nurtured over time, and completed through human devotion.

While the jewellery world often reduces pearls to grading charts and price categories, we believe true value cannot be measured so simply. A pearl carries the story of the ocean, the oyster, the climate, and the years required for its formation. Its beauty is not manufactured; it is cultivated.

Our mission is to educate individuals to see the value of pearls with their own eyes — and to choose with clarity and confidence.

To do so, we believe it is essential to share not only what we select, but also how and why we make those decisions.

Unlike diamonds, which obtain their unique sparkle through cutting and polishing, pearls shine naturally on their own—like shining babies born from mother oysters. Every pearl is born in nature and is truly one of a kind, with no two pearls being exactly the same. Despite advances in technology, the value of pearl is still assessed individually by experienced human eyes, ensuring the authenticity and uniqueness of each gem.

Pearl FALCO fully appreciates how the purchase of luxury pearl jewelry is never a casual decision. Pearl FALCO is commited to sharing our expert knowledge to help you evaluate and appraise pearl jewelry. Pearl FALCO here to help you make extremely well informed decisions. No Exceptions.

The 7 Best Criteria to Determine the Value Of Pearls

Luster, Thickness, Size, Shape, Color, Blemishes and Uniformity

By far, the most important criteria to determine the value of a pearl is luster or brightness. Pearls are made of so many fine layers of calcium carbonate – nacre – which the mother oyster forms around a nucleus. The layers of nacre are of the same compound as the mother oyster’s shell. As the mother oyster arranges so many fine layers of nacre around the nucleus, the more translucent and brilliant a pearl becomes.

In contrast, if the nacre is thick but uneven, a pearl will have a cloudy impression and the pearl’s value will be lower. The key to distinguishing the highest quality pearls is the interference color. In pearls, the interference color is described as, ‘green color floating in pink,’ similar to the iridescence of a soap bubble. Another well-tested determination method is to check to see how well you can see yourself reflected on the surface of your pearls, as if you are looking into a mirror.

As for a pearl’s size, especially for Japanese Akoya pearls, mother oysters are relatively small in size, roughly the size of a small child’s hand. The larger the Akoya pearls are, the greater the rarity and the higher their value. In the case of Akoya pearls, less than 1/3 of cultivated pearls can be used for jewelry.

The fact that a pearl’s ideal shape is a perfectly round sphere with magnificent luster is among yet another one of Mother Nature’s great works. In addition, since pearls are born from mother oysters, most naturally born pearls have scratches or blemishes. It can be said blemishes act as additional evidence of a pearl’s authenticity. As one can imagine, the value changes depending on the number, size and location of blemishes, whether the flaw is easy to identify, etc.

And finally, uniformity. Pearls are evaluated one by one by expert human eyes to find and group pearls of similar luster and color. The greater the uniformity of the pearls in a piece of jewelry, the higher their value. If a pearl necklace has virtually the same luster and color, the value will be substantially higher.

Pearl earrings are an excellent example of this. When evaluating earrings, expect both the right and left pearl earring to share the very same luster and color, and your earrings will maintain their value over the decades.

Our Philosophy: Seeing Beyond Surface Beauty

Many pearls appear beautiful at first glance.
Smooth surface. Attractive colour. Impressive size.

However, true quality is not always immediately visible.

At Pearl FALCO, pearls are evaluated through trained human eyes, long experience, and an understanding of overall balance — a method rooted in Ise-Shima, the birthplace of cultured pearls.

It was in Ise-Shima that pearl cultivation was first successfully commercialised, guided by patience and deep respect for nature. That philosophy continues to influence how we judge quality today.

We do not rely solely on scoring systems or certificates.
Numbers can describe a pearl, but they cannot fully express its presence.

Instead, we ask:

  • Will this pearl maintain its beauty over time?

  • Will its lustre deepen or fade?

  • Will its colour remain stable as it ages?

  • Does it harmonise naturally within jewellery?

A pearl must not only look beautiful today — it must continue to look beautiful years from now.

How We Judge Pearl Quality

Every pearl selected by Pearl FALCO is evaluated through a shared internal framework developed through experience and discipline.

1. Lustre — The Foundation of Beauty

Lustre is non-negotiable.

It is the life of the pearl.

True lustre is not simple surface shine. It is depth — a layered reflection created by healthy, tightly formed nacre. When light enters a pearl of high quality, it reflects back with clarity and dimension, almost as if glowing from within.

Without genuine lustre, a pearl does not represent Pearl FALCO — regardless of size or price.

We would rather choose a slightly smaller pearl with exceptional lustre than a larger pearl that lacks depth.

2. Nacre Thickness — Beauty That Endures

Nacre is the crystalline substance that forms the pearl. Its thickness determines durability, colour stability, and the longevity of lustre.

Sufficient nacre ensures:

  • Long-term durability

  • Stable colour as the pearl ages

  • Sustained depth of reflection

Pearls with insufficient nacre may look attractive initially but can dull over time. In some cases, surface treatments are used to enhance appearance, but enhancement cannot replace structural integrity.

For this reason, pearls lacking adequate nacre thickness are not used in our jewellery collections.

We select for endurance — not temporary brilliance.

3. Surface Condition — Harmony Over Perfection

Pearls are natural creations.

Minor characteristics are part of their identity.

At Pearl FALCO, we do not seek artificial perfection. Instead, we look for harmony. Natural marks that do not disturb the overall balance are accepted. However, flaws that disrupt proportion, reflection, or elegance are not.

A pearl should feel composed — not distracting.

Perfection is not our goal.
Balance is.

4. Shape and Matching — Jewellery Must Be Complete

A pearl does not exist in isolation once it becomes jewellery.

It must function within design.

For necklaces, earrings, or multi-pearl pieces, matching is critical. Tone, overtone, lustre strength, size graduation, and presence must align naturally.

Even a single centre pearl must enhance the design rather than overpower it.

If a pearl’s presence overwhelms the jewellery rather than elevates it, we do not use it.

Jewellery should feel complete — not forced.

5. Overall Balance — The Final Judgement

There is no point system at Pearl FALCO.

Final decisions are made through total evaluation.

We step back and observe:

  • Does the pearl feel stable?

  • Is its beauty quiet or artificial?

  • Does it have longevity in both structure and appearance?

A pearl may score well in individual categories, yet lack overall harmony. In such cases, we choose not to proceed.

Quality is not arithmetic.
It is balance.

Pearls We Choose Not to Use

At Pearl FALCO, not every beautiful-looking pearl is selected.

In particular, we choose not to handle pearls where:

  • The nacre is thin

  • Strong colour treatments are used to compensate for weak natural quality

Heavy enhancement may create immediate visual impact, but long-term durability and ageing behaviour become uncertain.

Colour treatments can fade. Thin nacre can weaken over time. Surface brilliance may not remain stable.

We value how a pearl will look in 10 or 20 years — not only today.

For this reason, pearls that rely heavily on enhancement are excluded at the sourcing stage and never enter our collection.

This is not a commercial decision.
It is a principle.

By saying “no” early, we protect integrity later.

Why This Matters

Pearls are often purchased to mark important life moments — marriage, anniversaries, milestones, legacy gifts.

They are passed from one generation to the next.

If durability is compromised, value is lost not only financially, but emotionally.

By carefully selecting pearls with structural strength and authentic beauty, we protect:

  • Long-lasting durability

  • Honest representation of quality

  • Trust with our customers

  • The legacy of cultured pearls

This is not about selling more.
It is about preserving value over time.

Our Mission

Pearls do not reveal their true value at a glance.

They require knowledge, patience, and trained observation.

Our mission at Pearl FALCO is to educate individuals to see the value of pearls with their own eyes — and to choose them with confidence, guided by understanding rather than marketing.

When someone learns how to recognise lustre, evaluate nacre, and judge harmony, they no longer depend on labels alone. They develop clarity.

That clarity builds trust.

And trust builds lasting relationships — not just with us, but with the pearl itself.

This philosophy guides every pearl we select and every piece of jewellery we create.

Because true value is not created by trends.

It is revealed through time.

Akoya Pearls Are World Renowned for Their High Luster

Pearls Are For Life

Many think of Akoya pearls as ‘expensive,’ but authentic Akoya pearls are not as easy to cultivate as other pearls. When perusing Akoya pearls, keeping the above criteria in mind to help better appreciate the value of each pearl. Also keep in mind, in terms of pearls and pearl jewelry, Akoya pearls are world-renowned for their distinctively high luster qualities.

Pearls, having captivated people around the world since ancient times, have been part of human culture for at least 5,000 years. Cultured pearls generally, and Akoya pearls specifically, have become more familiar to people because the Japanese were able to successfully culture round lustrous pearls for the first time in the late 19th Century, in the beautiful clear waters of Ise-Shima, Japan. Pearls are only ” living gemstone,” born in nature and cultivated with human love and devotion.
