Popularizing Akoya Pearls from Ise Shima Japan

The Grand Prix Akoya Pearl Jewellery Ise Shima, an opportunity for jewelry designers from all over the world to craft beautiful works of art and design, celebrated 5th Grand Prix this year in 2022. This has been exhibited in Japan Embassy for Singapore since 2020 and the number of entrants and  counteirs had been growing every year. Ms Maiko Makito explained “2022 our theme is “Moonlight”. Since ancient times, many cultures have cherished pearls as “Dewdrops from the Moon” dropped into the ocean. Explore ways to enjoy pearl jewelry regardless of gender, generation, or nationality

This project have offered us a glimpse of the future of pearl jewelry. in 2022, a total of 101 pearl jewellery creations from 11 countries were exhibited. 

1st Place, Ms Aastha Soni, a student of Pearl Academy, India said “Pearls is the daughter of the moon. Hugs from father feels the hug from heavens as it us warm, safe and protective. This work show love between father and daughter.” 

2nd Place, Ms Isabel Lim, a student of Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts(NAFA) explained “The serenade is to perform a piece of music for another person as an act of love and affection.This piece aims to highlight the importance of relationships through imagery of the moon and the earth. “

As Ms Makito explains, we started the annual jewelry competition “The Grand Prix of Akoya Pearl Jewellery in Ise Shima” in 2018. Since the 3rd Grand Prix exhibition onward, it has been held at the Embassy of Japan in Singapore, as well as in Ise Shima. Many local government officials along with business people visited the exhibition. Singapore local media reported how, “there is a woman who is working on the revitalization of the pearl business while managing the family business remotely,” and it became a popular topic in Singapore.
