The Pearl Legacy Project is dedicated to preserving the delicate marine environment essential to pearl farming, ensuring its vitality for future generations. Our mission encompasses not only safeguarding the environment but also advancing the art of pearl farming through innovative programs and community engagement.
We wish more people understood that every piece of pearl jewellery carries a unique story, reflecting the beauty of nature and the dedication of those who nurture these living gems. However, the art of Akoya pearl cultivation is facing significant challenges. Due to global warming and Japan’s ageing population, Akoya pearl production has declined dramatically, with a staggering 90% reduction compared to previous levels. In the past two years alone, 80% of Akoya mother oysters have perished.
1. Start from The Movie Screening – The Pearl Legacy in Golden Village, Singapore colloboration with Singapore Film Society
The recent screening of the film in Singapore The Pearl Legacy set in Ago Bay, Ise-Shima, the historic birthplace of pearl farming, highlights our commitment to this cause. The film is a heartful family comedy but it serves as a reminder of the beauty and tradition of pearl farming while emphasizing the importance of environmental conservation.
2. Making Documentaries with Film maker
Our documentary video which will be produced by the movie producer of The Pearl Legacy and his production c0mpany Kicksmah21 further advances this mission by featuring Maiko, who embarks on a global journey to discover the finest pearls. This initiative celebrates the diverse practices and traditions of pearl farming around the world, bringing global attention to the artistry and dedication involved. By bringing people into the heart of pearl farming through this documentary series with filmmakers, we provide a behind-the-scenes look at pearl farming, showcasing the artistry and dedication involved. This makes the process more understandable and relatable to a wider audience.
Through initiatives like The Pearl Legacy Project, people can see the real stories of the pearl farmers, pearl specialists, and communities behind each pearl. This exposure not only highlights the beauty of pearls but also the hard work and traditions behind each creation of pearl jewellery. It’s about showing that pearls are more than just jewellery—they’re part of a rich cultural heritage and a sustainable future.
3. Educational Tour & Workshop
We are developing educational programs to transfer traditional pearl farming techniques to the next generation. These programs aim to preserve valuable skills and knowledge, ensuring that the art of pearl farming continues to thrive.
In partnership with Shima Nature School, Pearl FALCO will offer an exclusive three-day educational tour of the picturesque region of Ise Shima. This unique experience is designed to immerse participants in the area’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty and provide an in-depth look into the origins and cultivation of Akoya pearls. Attendees will have the rare opportunity to visit pearl farms, observe traditional pearl harvesting techniques, and engage with local artisans who have perfected their craft over generations.
The visit will also include expert-led educational sessions focusing on pearl farming’s environmental sustainability and ecological importance. Those interested may register for participation at Pearl FALCO’s website, ensuring they gain a deeper appreciation for the intricate process of pearl cultivation amidst the scenic landscapes and cultural landmarks of Ise Shima.
We also organize Sea Environment Education, especially for Children. Educating young minds about the marine environment is central to our mission. We offer programs and workshops designed to raise awareness among children about the importance of ocean conservation and the role of pearl farming in maintaining marine ecosystems.
4. Supporting the Hatching of Pearl Oysters and Ocean Clean-Up Activities
We are actively involved in initiatives that support the hatching and cultivation of pearl oysters. By fostering the growth of these vital organisms, we contribute to the sustainability and health of pearl farming ecosystems.
And also our commitment to environmental stewardship includes participating in ocean clean-up activities. By removing debris and pollutants from marine environments, we help maintain the health of the waters crucial to pearl farming.
5. Promoting Knowledge Sharing and Fair Trade in Pearls
Transparency is crucial when purchasing pearl jewellery because each pearl, as a living gem born in nature, possesses unique characteristics that set it apart. Factors such as lustre, nacre thickness, size, shape, colour, blemishes, and uniformity vary significantly from one pearl to another. Clear and accurate information allows customers to appreciate and understand the individuality of each pearl they consider.
Pearl’s evaluation relies heavily on visual assessment, particularly for qualities like lustre and nacre iridescence, which cannot be standardised internationally. Therefore, providing transparent details helps convey the true beauty and value of each pearl to potential buyers.
Educating customers about pearls empowers them to make informed decisions. By understanding how pearls are formed, evaluated, and appreciated for their unique attributes, customers can confidently choose pearls that align with their tastes and preferences. Fostering transparency and sharing our knowledge ensures a meaningful and informed jewellery purchasing experience, allowing customers to select pearls based on their distinct allure and intrinsic qualities.
We also advocate for fair trade practices within the pearl industry, ensuring that pearl farming communities are supported and that ethical standards are upheld. This approach helps create a more equitable and sustainable market for pearls.
Our mission – The Pearl Legacy Project
Through these comprehensive efforts, The Pearl Legacy Project aims to create a lasting impact, ensuring that pearl farming remains a thriving and sustainable industry. By preserving the environment, supporting traditional practices, and fostering a new generation of environmental stewards, we are committed to safeguarding the future of pearl farming for generations to come.
