A Brief History of Mabe Pearls

Mabe Pearls were first cultivated in the Ryukyu Islands, a long island chain that stretches from Okinawa Japan to Taiwan.  The term “Mabe” is derived from the name of Mother Oysters with shells that have one-sided wing-like extensions. The extension of the “Penguin’s Wing Oyster,” for example, is called Mabe Gai – まべ貝” in Japanese, and is how the term “Mabe Pearl” came about.

The very first Mabe Pearls were cultivated by inserting tiny lead images of the Buddha onto the inner shell walls of the Mother Oysters, enticing her to wrap the image in so many layers of nacre to form a pearl. While Japan continues to be among the world’s leading producers of Mabe Pearls, today “blister pearls” are cultivated throughout Southeast Asia – China, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia, and French Polynesia.
