From Maiko’s Journal | Pearl of HOPE
Every pearl tells more than a story of beauty—it tells the story of the people behind it. In this journal, I reflect on the stories behind every pearl, the communities I continue to visit, and why these journeys have become about hope, resilience, and human connection rather than destinations alone.
Every year, the villages become a little more modern. New roads replace dusty paths. Old stone houses are painted in bright colours. Guesthouses appear. Hot showers and internet become available. Life is becoming easier. And I believe it should.
Every person deserves the opportunity to live a better life. So why do I still return every year . For many years, I thought I came back because I loved these villages. This year, I realised it was never really about the villages.
When I look at a pearl, I don’t only see its beauty. I see years beneath the sea. The hands that cared for it. The people who devoted their lives to it. The miracle created by nature, time, and countless human hands.
When I walk through a village, I don’t only see houses. I wonder about the lives lived inside them. What dreams were carried. What sacrifices were made. What responsibilities were quietly borne. What hopes remain today.
When I visit a local market, I don’t see vegetables. I see life.
Perhaps that is why I keep travelling. I realised I wasn’t searching for beautiful places. I was searching for the lives people have carried. The dreams they held. The responsibilities they bore. The quiet strength that allowed them to keep moving forward. We are the same humans who were just born in different countries or at different times.
I once thought Pearl of Hope was a project to give. Today, I know it is also a journey that teaches me to receive. Every year, I leave with far more than I bring. Not because I found answers, but because every journey reminds me to see beyond what is visible.
Perhaps that is why I always find my way back.
